The boy and the stripped pj

An important part of life is to have a sense of identity, culture and to belong. Sometimes we have to sacrifice some of our Identity to fit in, but we can learn new things and grow our Identity. A sense of belonging means you feel you are In the right place, your comfortable being yourself. While many people belong, there are also many people who don't belong, either by having a lack of friends, not fitting in or finding their surrounding new or unsure. In 2008 mark Hermes produced the movie the Boy In the Stripped Pajamas that has both aspect of belonging.In the Immigrant Chronicles by Peter Crooknecks, he writes is poems about his life experiences and weather or not if he belonged. 2 poems of his, from the immigrant chronicles that show a lack of belonging are â€Å"In the Folk Museum† and â€Å"The Migrant Hostel†. The Boy In the Stripped Pajamas Is a movie about a 8 year old boy called Bruno, him and his family are made to move to a place called out with (Auschwitz) , they move houses as his father is a highly ranked solider. Their new house is in sight of a connection camp, because of this Bruno is not allowed to do his most favorite thing explore, and must stay inside of the yard.The movie is set in World War 2, Germany After they move the first scene, where Bruno feels a sense of belonging Is when he runs out of the yard into the forest, the camera follows him by a tracking shot, this highlights the joy he gets from exploring. The overgrown surrounding highlights his freedom, after having nothing to do and no one to talk to; when he is running you can see how he feels a sense of belonging and identity. The closer Bruno gets to the fence the brighter the colors get; this reinforced the tone of Bruno and his happiness. Hen Bruno first comes across the fence and sees Samuel, he doesn't understand hat the connection camp is, he sees Samuel as a new friend that will be able to play with him. When Bruno and Samuel first meet the shot goes between the two of them, when the shot is on Bruno the background is bright yellow flowers, Bruno is in nice clean clothes, when the shots goes to Samuel the background it is dull grey colors and he Is wearing old dirty stripped pajamas, the dull colors shows us, that Samuel doesn't fit In to his surrounding, he doesn't belong In a contention camp at 8 years old.The scene gives us the visual clues that enabled us to compare their lives. We're not meant to be friends you and me, we're meant to be enemies did you know,† said by Bruno to Samuel, this shows the culture barrier between them. In one of the last scene with Bruno and Samuel Is when Bruno crosses the fence to help as he realizes what the camp is the, weather starts to storm and turn dull grey tones, which creates tension. The last view of Bruno and Samuel is when they get taken to the gas chamber with other prisoners.The view is them clutching hands, it shows even in death, they friendship is united, that in the end they belon ged to each other s friends. In the folk museum is about the poet being in a museum, he can't connected to the museum, because he feels like he is in a different time zone, that his surrounding aren't from where he is used, he doesn't belong in that time zone. The poem suggests the importance of belonging to a place and how it makes you feel. In stanza 1 the words â€Å"darkness† and â€Å"betray' creates a tone of isolated and alienation, it creates the atmosphere of lonely, sadness and sinister.In the movie, Bruno feels alienated, when he moved he has no one his age as him and wasn't allowed to explore, he feels like he can't belong to his new surrounding, that there is nothing their for him. The extending metaphor of the words, autumn, yellow and brown reinforced a mood of dull colors that creates a feeling of being alone and unpleasant that he isn't happy where he is. In the finial stanza line 3, â€Å"l leave without, wanting a finial look. † This is Lorraine; it creates the effect of a fast escape. When Bruno starts running he doesn't look back.It shows when you can to start to feel like you are belonging again, you don't need to look back you know what's right and you Just go for it. The Migrant Hostel is about the experiences of the author and others at a migrant hostels. Crooknecks creates the feeling of disappointment through the many reference of them having no control over their lives. The poem to me talks about the hardship and barriers of creating a new life. In stanza 1 line 1,2 â€Å"no one kept count, of all the coming and going†, this creates the feeling like they weren't important.The poem can relate the Samuel and the other member of the connection camp. The people from the connection camp are not treated right. â€Å"Those people, well their not really people at all, Bruno†, Bruno father ells Bruno, this shows how they can't belong as they aren't even considered to be people at all. In stanza 3 line 2†³we lived like birds of passage† this is a simile, the we in the sentence can refer to everyone in the camp that even know they don't belong they are starting a new Journey and they all want to fly out.It also refers to the way migrants are still in transit as everything is changing and they are being constantly moved around. Which can make them have a lack of security and belonging to the place The line â€Å"a barrier at the main gate, sealed off the highway' is making the separation f them and Australia, it makes them feel powerless, the highway symbioses the fence is a recurring motif in the movie, many scenes including where they meet, is the fence.The fence becomes a barrier between their friendships, but it is what ties they together. The gate in the poem can give them hope; it could represent the new start, that once they're through the gate their started. The Boy in the Stripped pajamas, In the Folk Museum and The Migrant hostel shows the importance of belonging to peopl e and place and how it can relate to making people unhappy.

CPTED principles Essay I. The following are the Four CPTED Principles arranged in their relative importance: 1. Surveillance- Surveillance for me is the most important of the four CPTED principles. This approach is direct; a person will avoid performing a crime when they feel that they can be observed. It is also important because it allows some level of control from the owner and other concerned parties. For example, a person is committing a crime, with surveillance, there is a high probability that the owner or other concerned citizens will see him, thus an immediate response can be done. 2. Territoriality- This is next to surveillance because it also shows control. Distinguishing private areas from public will discourage people from approaching the area without a purpose. It shows that the proprietor knows and cares for his area of responsibility and any intruder is subject to the proprietor’s discretion. 3. Image- After the territory is marked, the image of the palace must be developed to strengthen it. By maintaining a positive image of the area, the owner is establishing it as a holistic area where good natured and productive deeds are done thus, showing that wrongdoings are not welcomed and will not be tolerated. 4. Environment-Maintenance of the environment ranks last not because it is least effective but rather because it is collaboration, a concern not only of a single owner but of the entire surroundings. An owner might want to implement it but no matter what his/her effort is, it is useless if the neighbors are uncontrollable or do not want to cooperate. Also, state if you believe CPTED and its associated principles are valid and successful crime prevention strategies. Oscar Newman (1972) determined that crime rates vary according to the four principles stated above. Surveillance is may be the most effective of all the approach since it can be easily installed. The most common form of this is the CCTV surveillance. In a study conducted in June 1997, Nieto concluded that â€Å"CCTV video surveillance is successful in reducing and preventing crimes and is helpful in prosecuting individuals caught in the act of committing a crime†(para. 4). He added that it is cost saving. The other three principles, territoriality, image and environment serve as reliable guide for designing the safety of the place. It is important to note that crimes vary with the location of the institution. As Patricia and Paul Brantingham (1981) said, crimes like murder and assault occur in areas of economic decline and neglect, whereas white-collar crimes occur in area in which a high number of potential victims exist†(160-171). CPTED may have its drawback when implemented poorly but proper preparation for its implementation in an area definitely helps may it be in the prevention, an immediate response or a post-analysis of a crime. As stated in the website of the Los Angeles Police Department(2010), â€Å"experience strongly suggests that application of CPTED in combination with other Department crime prevention programs will help reduce crime and fear of crime in the community†(para 14). Alarm Systems Alarm systems work best in facilities inside large buildings. The area must be large enough so that the function of the alarm system will be maximized, small areas often does not need such a system. Alarm systems are effective indoors because sensors are programmed to react with some variations in the conditions of the environment. Indoors are much more controlled than in the outdoors. Strength of this countermeasure is that the alarm communicates fast through out the facilities so that everybody can know if something wrong is happening. Weaknesses of this as Mc Crie (2007) stated is that the wires or cables that are used to transmit signal can be cut easily either intentional or by accident. The usual costs associated are for installation cost and maintenance. Based on Table 10. 2 (Mc Crie, 2007), the total cost is relatively high. Signs This countermeasure is useful in areas that do not require much protection that is when the harm that can be done is small. A good example is private properties that are under construction or not yet in use. Signs that say no trespassing and indicating the corresponding penalties are useful enough to lessen the probability of having intruders. The strength of this is that it incurs very low cost (the cost is only for making the sign) and seldom needs follow-up maintenance. However, planned and determined offense can not be prevented by this measure. Access Control System The best location to use this countermeasure is in restricted areas where only few personnel are allowed to enter. It must be located in all access points such as the entrance and exits as well as in other machines and facilities. Such areas are the research facilities of companies. The access to such areas needs to be limited because the operations performed are critical and confidential. As stated on Table 10. 2 (Mc Crie, 2007), it can deter, delay and detect. The strength of this system lies in the fast growth of technologies available to facilitate such measure. With these technologies, a company can choose from a variety of system that can fit their needs and budget. The weakness of this is some access controls can be stolen from the authorized person. This involves IDs and sometimes passwords. System that uses biometric features can also malfunction at times. Common errors are in the processing of the data. â€Å"False-positive (also called Type I or A) errors occurs when an authorized person accesses a restricted facility where he or she should have been allowed† (Mc Crie, 2007 p. 305) and he or she is denied access. On the other hand, the â€Å"false-negative (also called Type II or B) errors allow admission to someone who should not be admitted but is† (Mc Crie, 2007 p. 305). Associated cost is relatively high and includes the installation of the system, training for the concerned personnel. Lighting Systems Hallways are the area where lighting systems have important effect in terms of security measures. It works in two ways: it protects the employees from accidents with the fixtures of the area and personal assaults; it also protects the facility from intruders. This can be easily implemented in almost any condition and a tried and tested way of increasing security of a place. The weakness of this is that it is only a deterrent; it cannot stop an ongoing offense unless a security personnel is watching the place. So, it is important that with good lighting, the visibility of the area to other personnel is also ensured in the design consideration. Associated cost is low; it includes the installation, electricity cost and maintenance such as replacement of bulbs and repairs. III. Security Operations Management. Security planners must be involved early in facility design because if the physical and technology based security measures will be done after the structure is designed or built, it will disrupt the existing situation and may cause the employees to feel that â€Å"the management is putting systems above people† (Mc Crie, 2007 p. 285). The novel Lord of the Flies Essay Imagine being on a deserted island with no rules, no civilization, nothing besides the need to survival. The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell are two fictional stories that deal with this concept, exploring the behavior of humans in such a primitive, unstructured environment. In both stories, a distinct division develops between hunters and the hunted, and while each story conveys and focuses on slightly different aspects, the two stories more importantly share the same fundamental view on the overall, underlying theme in regards to human nature. In The Most Dangerous Game, general Zaroff is the hunter. As the title of the short story implies, hunting is a fun and thrilling game to Zaroff. His cunningness and his natural instinct for hunting led to his many successes as a hunter because as he said himself, The animal had nothing but his legs and his instinct. Instinct is no match for reason' (Connell, 47). Using his instinct and reason, the hunter in this short story demonstrates an exceptional super ego. However, his instinct is evil. With his superiority to animals, Zaroff was no longer satisfied with hunting animals, so he progressed to killing other animals with both instinct and reason-humans. His disregard for human life shows Zaroffs twisted nature. During his hunt of the human Rainsford, Rainsford thought: Only the devil himself could follow that complicated trail through the jungle after dark. But, perhaps, the general was a devil (Connell, 54). Throughout the book, this being an example, Connell alludes to the evilness of Zaroffs character. Zaroffs mind and his nature illustrate him as cunning, but corrupt person. The group of hunters in Lord of the Flies also becomes animalistic and savage. At one point, Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering (Golding, 115). Even Ralph, who is considered to be more mature and civilized than the others, became caught in the thrill of the hunt. This is because in Lord of the Flies, the hunters completely lose their identity and sense of reason when they hunt, relying purely on their instinct. The evil actions of the hunters when theyre following their instinct show how humans are evil in nature. Despite the hunters brave act and their domination over the island, they all fear the unknown Beast. Jack, the head of the hunters, describes it as a dark thing, a beast, some sort of animal. (Golding 89) The Beast, which is given a physical form as the pig head and as Lord of the Flies, symbolizes the Devil that is within all the hunters and the human race in general. In this aspect, the state of mind of the hunter is Lord of the Flies is similar to The Most Dangerous Game because both stories suggest that humans are primitive and evil in nature. The hunters in both stories enjoy killing, starting with animals and moving on to humans. However, Zaroff also does not seem to fear anything, unlike the boys in Lord of the Flies who fear the Beast. Zaroff also uses his mind a lot more than the boys who completely lose their sense of reason once they become entranced by the hunt. In a sense, Zaroff is the more terrifying one because he reasons that it is completely acceptable to kill humans, whereas the boys mindlessly kill. If there are hunters, then there must be the hunted. At the beginning of The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford expresses his attitude towards hunting in his conversation with Whitney: Great sport, hunting. The best sport in the world, agreed Rainsford. For the hunter, amended Whitney. Not for the jaguar. Dont talk rot, Whitney. (Connell, 39) Ironically, later on in the story, Rainsford is the one being hunted. His attitude towards hunting changes. He acknowledges that animals feel terror, having played the fox (Connell, 54) himself. When being hunted, Rainsford felt panic and dread and knew the full meaning of terror (Connell, 55). Even though Rainsford had previously hunted and been in the war, it was different to be hunted. He would do anything to stay alive. Rainsford fights to keep his nerve throughout the hunt, but taken over by fear, his instinctual, animal side surfaces. At one point during the hunt, Rainsfords impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther (Connell, 54) even though his reason told him not to. His instinctual act of jumping into the sea and then proceeding to kill Zaroff saves him in the end. Like Zaroff, Rainsford uses both his mind and instinct-his super ego. Originally a hunter, Rainsford finds himself on the other side as the animal in fear, using his wit and instinct to overcome the hunter. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph also becomes trapped in a situation being hunted by others. Through his fear, Ralph tries to devise a rational plan, but he was beginning to dread the curtain that might waver in his brain, blacking out the sense of danger, making a simpleton of him (Golding, 196). Ralph fears losing his reason, and he fights to keep his reason while all the other boys lose theirs. There are moments where Ralph loses it, particularly near at the end of the novel. When being hunted by the savages, Ralph becomes hysteric with fear: Dont scream. Youll get back Ralph screamed, a scream of fright and anger and desperation He swung the stake and the savage tumbled over (Golding, 199). With his life in danger, he forgot his wounds, his hunger and thirst, and became fear (Golding, 200). Previously sheltered from danger, Ralph did not know true fear until he became exposed to evil on the island and realized the evil the hunters are capable of. When pushed into a corner, Ralphs panic and his need to survive made him act on instinct, becoming like a savage as a result because humans are evil by instinct. In both The Most Dangerous Game and Lord of the Flies, the hunted initially start out as hunters. The quick turn of events demonstrates how fragile status can be based on differences in reasoning and power. Although Rainsford and Ralph try to keep their nerve, they experience terror and desperation when their life is in danger. Instinct shows dominance when the prey is in fear, and as a result of the need to survive, the hunted commit animalistic acts to defend against the evil hunters. The incorporation of hunters and the hunted contributes to the theme of humanity in The Most Dangerous Game. The story suggests the idea that the world is made up of two classes-the hunters and the hunted (Connell 40). It is because of this division that fear, struggle for survival and power exists, bringing out the worst in humans. Humans are degraded to the level of animals in The Most Dangerous Game. In Zaroffs point of view, a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than (Connell 49) the human scum of the earth (Connell 49). Zaroffs heartless view of humans illustrates his evil nature. In his regard, humans are essentially all animals with reason, and like all animals, humans in their simplest form feel fear. Whitney contradicts Rainsfords belief that animals have no understanding: I rather think they understand one thing-fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death (Connell 39). Fear is a primal instinct that everyone harbors. Put into an unstructured environment, fear brings out the worst in humans. It causes people to lose their nerve and act instinctively without thought. In humans, fear of death brings out the raw need to survive. In the short story, Rainsford was willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his survival, even if it meant killing his pursuers. The hunted sink to the same level as the hunters because it is kill or be killed. This shows how human nature is evil, selfishly treating others to fulfill their own desires. The Most Dangerous Game suggests that the bad nature of humans surface when engulfed by fear. Lord of the Flies also contains a message regarding humanity. In his novel, Golding advocates that humans all feel fear. A concrete example of this is shown in the novel where the boys fear of the Beast tears them apart. As discovered when the Beast addresses Simon, Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill You knew, didnt you? Im part of you? Close, close, close! Im the reason why its no go? Why things are what they are? (Golding, 143) Tainted with fear, the evil nature in humans grows. The desire for power is also an aspect of human nature that separates people. There is a conflict of power between Jack and Ralph, and as a result, a division occurs between the boys. The fact that most of the boys choose Jacks authoritative power over Ralphs democratic power shows how humans respond better to fear and brutality rather than rules and reasoning. Even though the boys have their own system of power on the island, their own rules are very much different from the rules of the civilization they came from. As the story progresses, the influence of the civilizations rules decrease and the savagery of the boys increase. For example, at first when Roger was throwing rocks, there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life (Golding 62). Lord of the Flies stresses how civilization protects the innocence of humans, preventing them from being exposed to the evil nature of humans. The evil nature of humans is brought out by fear in both The Most Dangerous Game and Lord of the Flies. There is a struggle survival in both stories, although as the boys in Lord of the Flies lose their sense of reason, they dismiss being rescued, and their attention is more focused on the conflict of power and hunting. Both stories are set on an island away from civilization where havoc activities occur, but the need for civilization is emphasized more in Lord of the Flies. While there are these minor differences, the underlying message about humanity is the same-human nature is bad. The Most Dangerous Game conveys this message by representing humans as animals acting instinctively to survive, and Lord of the Flies emphasizes the message through the symbol of the pig head being the Devil. In the end, both stories effectively express the idea that humans are evil in nature. The Most Dangerous Game and Lord of the Flies are two stories that both include the components of the hunters, the hunted and a message about humanity. While there are differences within these elements, the overall moral about humanity remains the same in both stories. That is, that human nature is bad. In the view of my case study, HR of British Gas has already maintained the role of manager. If he did not maintain the role of HR manager then organisation can not go to their goals. The role of HR manager: There are some roles of HR manager by which they run an organisation. It has given bellow: Planning, resourcing and retention: A line manager need to know how many staffs are now working, which department is busier, which department they need some people. When he will indentify this things then he will plan how many staffs he will take and how process he will take. For example Sainsbury is very busy at Saturday and Sunday. So managers of Sainsbury need more staff for these weekend day. And he also need to find out how many staff are good at for operating system. Then he will take decision for taking or recruiting people. This is the planning and resourcing role for line manager. Retention is also important role for line manager. It can be define the retention like some of staffs are recruiting for new staff, but manager have to know to know are they happy for their time being. Recruitment and selection: When manger will confirm that they need people essentially, in that time they need to find out appropriate people for their organisation, by which he can achieve their organisation goals as well. It is most important role for a manager because if he can not find out right people then he will be failed for achieving organisation goals. To find out right people he need to select more productive people who are very much enthusiastic, good behave and first of all who can help organisation for achieving their goals. Training and development: To take right people for their organisation manager manage to give training to make appropriate for work. Because new people do not know what is their main responsibilities and operating system. So manager need to know everybody about their job. Reward remuneration: Employees depend on their organisation for surviving their live. So manager have to pay adequate and equitable. Manger also has to manage reward system like pensions, healthcare, other financially. By rewarding employee get more satisfaction to work. If employees are happier on their organisation then they will work more. Employee relations: Employees relation is another important role of manager. Importance of flexibility: An organisation needs to give flexibility to their employee for developing or achieving their goals. There are different side for flexibility. Organisation can give their customer satisfaction as they need by flexibility. By flexibility organisation can give their staff happiness, better staff motivation. Staffs also get more support for surviving their live. By flexibility organisation can rise up their fertility. Staffs are also more ease with one and another. Types of flexibility: There are different types of flexibility like part-time work, shift time work. Description has given bellow: Part-time working: Part time working means that type of work where employee works standard time or less than full time hour. Flexitime: When employees work in a free time of starting, finishing and take break in order to employer. Staggered hours: Staggered hour can be defined that employee has different starting, finishing and breaking time allowing organisation to open longer hours. Compressed working hours: Compressed hour means that an employee work 40 hours in a week but he wants to work same hour within 5 days. Job sharing: An employee who work as a full time worker but he wants to split between another employee who agree to work with him. Shift swapping: When employee manages their shift among themselves by covering all requirements of organisation. Time off in lieu: Sometime employee work more hour when organisation get peak activity but when organisation get less busy time that time employee go for time off in lieu. Term-time working: It can be described that normally in term time employee work in his organisation like 20hour per week but when his or her school, college or university go to holiday in that time employee work like term time. Annual hours: Annual hour means employee calculates his or her hours annually and the employer decorate shift but employer keep some hours in their hand. When organisation get peak time, then they call them for work. Zero hours contracts: An employee work that hour which his need that is called zero hour (Business link, 2010). 2.3 Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of flexible working practices from both the employee and the employer perspective in your chosen organization. [P6] Flexible working has advantage and disadvantage. In my case study British Gas should take decision after looking advantage and disadvantage of flexible working. Functions of performance management: There are three functions of performance management. Strategic function: Performance management must be able to find where employees are matching their work with organisations goal. For doing this organisation need to know in which place it is occurring. For doing this strategic function they have flexible because of flexibility can change the goal and nature of organisations. Sometime some organisations fail to do this then they like administrative and development function. Administrative function: Every organisation has to pay their employee and for getting popularity they do promotion, besides this they have to make retention, redundancy. So many of the organisation use administrative function for doing this job. Development function: By doing development function managers of any organisation can realize when an employee doing his or her job well and can be improve themselves. But normally without performance appraisal it is not possible to measure the poor performance of employee and by this employee also improve them. Performance appraisal: Performance appraisal is the way by which manager can evaluate and justify the employee performance. By this if employee performance shows poor then manger can improve them. Objectives of performance management: Shortly an objective of performance is SMART which can be explained by Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound (Bloisi, 2007). 3.1.3 Critically evaluate different human resource practices in the workplace. [P12] Human resource practises in workplace is very important for any organisation. So British Gas needs to practises the human resource for developing their organisation. They have followed the bellow types of practises: Mandatory meeting with producer and department manger: An organisation have to create meeting with producer and manger about the performance, training need or not, quantity of success and so on. Recruiting: Organisation have to find out in which department they have to recruit, what kinds of people are allowed to apply and they should give the position which they need. Finally they have to provide their every through their web site. Open book management style: An organisation have to mange open book management system like sharing the business report and the position of their organisation in market. Bonuses: An organisation has mange bonuses for employee. By this way employee can know how their performance in organisation and the amount of profit of organisation. It will be helpful for organisation. 360 degree performance management feedback system: It is the feedback for employee to know the performance of their. If any organisation gives this to employee then employee will be touch about their performance which can be bear better result for organisation. Keeping it legal: Organisation must keep everything legal by which people and employee can trust to the organisation (Archives IGDA, 2010). 3.1.4 Evaluate the impact of globalization on issues such as human resource planning. [P13] Every organisation has impact of globalisation. British Gas has to maintain and realize impact of globalisation. Impact of globalisation has given bellow: For globalisation, human resource planning increased economic independence of nation. Capital, information and technology flows are in the increase. Organisation competition are going base on innovation. Organisations of globalisation are large extent and beyond national boundaries. Human resource can apply for reasonable products or necessary things from other country. Globalisation has started new technology through the world on human resource planning. The nature of organisation and employee has changed for this. Management workplace diversity: Manager needs to change from an ethnocentric view to a culturally relative perspective. There are different practises that manager can adopt in ensuring effective management in workplace diversity in order to attain organisations goal: Planning a monitoring programme is the best way to give feedback to employee about their workforce by culturally. Organising talents strategically about the employee base is another important human resource professional practise. By motivational approaching organisation can improve their employee performance for getting organisation goal. Gain sharing means an organisation which gain that should be shared (All Experts, 2010). Conclusion: I believe that I have written all of criteria from my case study. Finally managing human resource is the helpful for all organisation and employee.
